Who is leading MEdIES? The Core Group
MEdIES is an initiative of the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE), that holds the overall coordination and the secretariat. MIO-ECSDE is the biggest Federation of Mediterranean NGOs engaged in environmental, cultural and sustainable development issues.
Several other important actors are included in the Core Group of the initiative such as - the United Nations Environment Programme/ Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP), the United Nations Educational and Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) - Global Water Partnership - Mediterranean (GWP-Med) for water related activities.
Other partners of the Core Group include the Hellenic Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Climate Change. As of May 2006, MEdIES has been officially certified by the Hellenic Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs as an International Network on ESD, a certification that was renewed in 2009 for an operating period of 3 years.
Core Group members are consulted via e-mail. Depending on available funds occasional meetings of this group may be organised. By cooption up to 3 very important stakeholders and/or donors can be part of this group on a rotational basis.
Who is partner to MEdIES? The Task Group
The complexity and diversity of ESD issues require that a wide range of stakeholders are engaged through a partnership approach: relevant Ministries, NGOs, media, the private sector, education institutions, research institutes, etc.
MEdIES applies an inter-sectoral and multi-disciplinary participation approach for its implemented activities, therefore engaging a wide range of partners including Ministries, IGOs, NGOs, Universities, etc. These bodies comprise the Task Group of MEdIES, and follow closely its activities. Obviously, these comprise the focal points of MEdIES around the Mediterranean, and are the main partners for its projects.

Who else is involved? The wide e-network of MEdIES
Meanwhile the "heart" of the initiative is a wide e-network of formal and non formal educators and schools implementing the integrated educational programmes proposed as a vehicle to sustainable development. These e-members have free access to MEdIES educational material, and they may also upload their comments and lesson plans, search for colleagues in other countries working on common issues, etc.
